Root canal treatment
Root canal treatment is a treatment aimed at restoring and preserving a badly damaged or infected tooth in order to avoid its extraction. The procedure consists of removing the damaged area of the tooth (pulp), cleaning and disinfecting the area, and then filling and sealing it. Pulp damage is often due to broken teeth, deep caries, repeated dental procedures, or trauma. The term "root canal" refers to the cleaning of the canals present within the root of a tooth (root canals).
Before devitalization begins, a dental examination is usually done, an x-ray examination to check for infection at the pulp level; the infected pulp can necrotize and spread infection, which in worst cases can reach the bone.
Tra i sintomi caratteristici dell’infezione alla polpa troviamo:
- pain when drinking / taking a hot or cold drink / food
- chewing pain
- night pain
As the infection progresses, symptoms may disappear, but this does not mean that it is improving; the infection has probably reached the root canal; later it may appear:
- swelling of the gums
- abscess formation
- swelling of the face
- tooth discoloration
Phases of devitalization
- Local anesthesia
Local anesthesia is given to isolate the nerves and prevent the patient from feeling pain. - Isolation and preparation of the crown
A small latex tissue is applied and fixed to the tooth. A hole is then created in the crown to access the damaged or infected pulp using a root file. - Removal and disinfection.
Dental pulp and any bacterial residues in the root canal are completely removed. The entire canal is disinfected with special solutions to remove root dentin, bacteria and minerals that block secondary canals and tubules. Disinfection takes place by injection of a powerful bactericide or intraradicular ultrasound and / or nickel-titanium. - Filling
After disinfection, the root canal is filled with sterile material.. - Tooth seal
At the final stage, the tooth is sealed.
